Have you ever heard of the story of King Solomon’s Judgment? Where the two women were having a dispute over the maternity of a baby?
The two women lived in the same household, each having a son. One woman accidentally smothered her’s and swapped the children to pass the live child off as her own.
The women went to King Solomon to settle the dispute. His verdict was that the baby would be cut in half by a sword, so that each woman would get her share.
Upon hearing the verdict, the liar acquiesced and the true mother cried out that the other could have the child, so he wouldn’t be killed. Solomon knew that her true, maternal instinct was speaking, and he awarded her the child.
Now imagine the story sans maternal or paternal instinct. Rather the child is a bond that permanently binds people who genuinely despise one another.
