An example of the Rabat rug. Rug patterns traditionally vary from a region or city to the next as with most artisan products - e.g. silver, beading, leather, brass and most famously pottery.
Urban rugs, like this one, in Morocco are usually characterized by symmetry with one or more focal medallions like the red part you see in the center. Rabat rugs commonly contain a very bright red dye as the dominant color.
This is the variety my grandmother and the women who worked for her wove. The rug patterns are variable though many are often play on patterns that have existed for centuries.
